Ways to Give

Almost every gift to a qualified charitable organization comes with certain tax benefits, thanks to our government’s ongoing encouragement of the private support of charities.  However, in many situations it is possible to receive more than just a charitable income tax deduction. Certain ways of giving make it possible to bypass capital gains taxes on appreciated assets, significantly reduce estate taxes and even establish a whole new source of income for yourself and your family.

Life Income Agreements

The ELCA Foundation administers a variety of life income agreements for the benefit of those people willing to make an irrevocable gift to ultimately benefit ELCA ministries, while retaining a life-income interest in their gift. These agreements are in compliance with the U.S. Philanthropy Protection Act of 1995 and the growing number of state regulations governing the administration and issuance of charitable gift annuities.

APPRECIATED PROPERTY

Real Estate

The ELCA Foundation can accept a gift of environmentally clean real estate as an outright gift and as a gift to a charitable remainder unitrust or life income agreement.

Stock and Securities

The advantages of giving stock to Lutheran Planned Giving partners include:

  • You bypass capital gains
  • You receive full market value for your gift
  • The gift can be better than cash
  • It is a charitable tax deduction
  • Can be in the form of outright gifts or life income gifts

Contact Lutheran Planned Giving of South Dakota to discuss the benefits of giving stock or securities.

LIFE INSURANCE

You can make a significant impact on the ministries of LPGSD, whether or not you are a person of means. A gift of life insurance is a way to remember your favorite ministries. You can:

  • Change the beneficiary on an existing policy. Simply call your life insurance representative or the insurance company and ask for the change of beneficiary form. There is no cost to change beneficiaries.
  • Transfer ownership of your cash value life insurance policy to a member of LPGSD. You will receive a charitable income tax deduction for making the gift.
  • Establish a new charitable life insurance policy. You’ll receive a charitable income tax deduction each time a gift is made to support the policy.

Contact Lutheran Planned Giving of South Dakota to discuss how a gift of life insurance can benefit you and the ministry you choose.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY

A Charitable Gift Annuity is a gift that gives, and continues to give. You can make a gift of cash or securities to the ELCA Foundation and that gift can provide you with a guaranteed annual income for the rest of your life. And your gift continues to give, even after your death. That’s because when you make your gift to a ministry(s) of LPGSD, that ministry will receive the remaining portion of your annuity at the end of your life.

Contact Lutheran Planned Giving of South Dakota to get an individual proposal of what income you may receive based on your age.  We can discuss how a charitable gift annuity might increase your income and still provide a gift to your ministry.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST

You can give stocks, securities or real estate in a Charitable Remainder Trust, which can pay you income for life and up to twenty years to your children as beneficiaries.  At the end of this time, the amount of the Charitable Remainder Trust will be paid to your chosen ministry.
